They are a hardy, peaceful, colourful and low maintenance fish. Goldfish will thrive in water temperatures between 15 and 22 degrees with good water quality (no ammonia, nitrite, chlorine and a ph of around 7). Goldfish grow to approximately 15 centimeters but this will be a lot smaller in tanks where space is limited.

Maintenance

Goldfish are heavy and messy eaters and for this reason it is necessary to have a filter. Having a filter in the tank will help in breaking down the waste and will keep the water cleaner. Every week perform a 25% water change and add tap water conditioner when adding the new water. Tap water conditioner removes the chlorine from the water and makes it safe for fish.

Every four weeks lightly rinse out the filter and make sure that it is working properly when you plug it back in.

Bringing your goldfish home

Firstly make sure your tank is setup properly. Rinse the gravel, fill with water and add tap water conditioner/stress coat, put in any decorations and install the filter. For the first two weeks of the tank being set up also add Stress Zyme which is enclosed in the Goldfish Start Up Pack. This will help with breaking down the waste before the beneficial bacteria is established in the tank.

When adding your goldfish float the bag in the tank for 15 minutes then open the bag and every 10 minutes add a cup full of your tank water to the bag until the bag is full. This will acclimatise the fish to its new water parameters.

When the bag is full scoop the fish out of the bag with a net- never add water from someone else’s tank to your tank.

Feed lightly, for example every second day, for the first week. After a week you can feed once daily. Be careful not to overfeed as this will lead to too much waste being in the system.
